AKB Strategies, a boutique communications and government affairs consulting firm working with progressive non-profit organizations, trade associations and local governments, is looking for a Communications Associate with outstanding organizational, project management, writing and problem-solving skills. We are looking for someone who works independently, thrives on variety, and is passionate about progressive causes such as combatting human trafficking, reducing food waste and ending hunger, creating a sustainable energy future, and promoting patients’ access to quality healthcare.

The Communications Associate’s primary responsibilities include establishing and maintaining systems to keep client projects and our small firm running smoothly, while also providing support for our clients. The Associate will create and update project plans, write and edit client memos and reports, record meeting notes, and manage the principal’s schedule, along with other administrative duties.

A successful candidate will have experience and interest in communications, advocacy or public policy. Campaign, website management or social media experience a plus. This is a great opportunity for an emerging communications professional to learn more about the field of advocacy communication and client management, and work to advance important and interesting causes.

Location: Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage client project timelines
  • Write and edit written materials such as client proposals and memos, press releases, op-eds, pitch letters, social media posts and other client materials
  • Assist in developing client communication plans
  • Research and compile materials needed for meetings, calls, webinars and projects
  • Track news and reporters covering issues relevant to clients
  • Take notes and prepare meeting minutes
  • Maintain administrative systems
  • Manage firm principal’s schedule
  • Perform other communications and administrative duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of experience in advocacy, government relations, communication, campaign organizing or related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong organizational ability with careful attention to detail
  • Capacity to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Competency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Competency in web content management or social media desired
  • Professional manner
  • Passion for human rights, environmental, social justice and healthcare issues
