Organization Mission Statement:
The Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit, is a non-partisan coalition of 26 organizations representing more than 6 million farming families, 100,000 scientists, hundreds of colleges and universities, consumers, veterinarians, and others. Together, we are working toward our mutual goals of increasing federal investments in agricultural research to produce the best possible food and agriculture science and focusing more of our best minds on feeding America and the world. SoAR advocates for additional agricultural research support, including full funding of the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, USDA’s flagship competitive grants program. Sufficient federal investment and wise policies are essential if the United States is to continue to be a global leader in agriculture. This will benefit the lives of Americans through: protecting public health by enhancing the nutrition, affordability, and safety of food, improving soil, air, and water quality, discovering new treatments and cures to diseases, strengthening the U.S. economy, creating jobs, and increasing profitability and contributing to the security and stability of all nations.

Organizational Needs:
SoAR would welcome pro-bono services to assist with the development of the forthcoming “Retaking the Field” report (volume 3). This includes marketing, social media, and communications for the series. SoAR produced the first two volumes in collaboration with 19 universities (see below). From removing peanut allergens to protecting tomatoes with caterpillar saliva, it tells stories about exciting advances and innovative research in the animal and plant sciences and how scientists are solving some of the thorniest questions in food production. The series highlights research breakthroughs funded by the USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. It is part of SoAR’s broader education and advocacy to encourage additional federal support for research. Although SoAR is a new organization (staffed since February 2015), SoAR has been very successful in garnering media attention. New York Times published an op-ed in January 2016 by two board members entitled: “We Need a New Green Revolution”. Over 40 national and regional media outlets covered Retaking the Field, including the National Geographic's "The Plate", Chronicle of Higher Education, Politico, and others. Washington Post reporter Darryl Fears wrote a front page story based on research from Iowa State University. For each Retaking the Field launch, SoAR held House and Senate briefings where university researchers described the value of their work to congressional staff. We set up meetings with researchers and journalists to expand coverage. We held information sessions at the National Press Club with researchers and DC Science Writers Group. Universities: Cornell, Iowa State, Kansas State, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State , North Carolina State, North Carolina A&T, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, Texas A&M , Tuskegee, UC Davis, University of Florida, University of Illinois, University of Nebraska, Virginia Tech, and Washington University in St. Louis.
