Overview

The Senior Development Officer/ Development Officer develops and implements strategies to raise funds and manage donor relations for the Global Economy and Development program (“Global”) at Brookings. In coordination with the Senior Director of Development and Management (“Senior Director”), Global scholars, and Central Development (DEV), the officer manages, prioritizes, and carries out Global fundraising activities and provides stewardship.

Responsibilities

 Fundraising and Donor Relations (70%)

  • Works in coordination with the Senior Director and scholars to create and implement fundraising goals and strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward individual, corporate, foundation, government, and other donors.
  • Manages a fundraising portfolio of centers, initiatives, and/or scholars of Global, as designated by the Senior Director, and implements and tracks day-to-day fundraising operations within this portfolio.
  • Identifies fundraising opportunities and researches new prospects for support; assesses the potential and capacity of existing and prospective donors.
  • Advises Global scholars on fundraising opportunities.
  • Moves donors through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process, including identifying and arranging meetings with Brookings scholars, preparing talking points and briefings, conducting follow-up, managing correspondence and contact with donors; serving as key contact for gift agreement process with donors.
  • Represents the work of Global scholars to current and potential funders. Maintains and stewards relationships with prospects and donors.
  • Writes concept notes, solicitation letters, and proposals. Coordinates content in collaboration with scholars and edits documents to ensure high quality, readability, a consistent voice, and adherence to individual funder guidelines, interests, and programs. Assembles proposal materials. Collaborates with colleagues in DEV and from other research programs on fundraising efforts, including assistance with producing multi-program or institution-wide proposals that include the work of Global scholars.
  • Advises, plans, and implements events and other outreach opportunities for prospects and donors; follows-up with participants.
  • Represents the Senior Director at internal or external meetings, as requested.

Tasks in Support of Fundraising  (30%)

  • Works with scholars and staff, and drafts and/or directs the production of grant reports.
  • Partners with Global scholars and program staff to track deliverables, manages grant modifications or special reporting needs, and liaises with the funders if modifications or extensions are needed. Works with the Senior Director to track the progress of Global scholars toward completing tasks consistent with commitments made to funders.
  • Maintains complete files on fundraising activity in Raiser’s Edge, including correspondence with donors, meeting notes, proposals, and background information.
  • Participates in the drafting of public documents on the Global program and its direction, as well as other communications tools that are needed for effective outreach.
  • Coordinates prospects and fundraising activities with the Institution’s Central Development (“DEV”) office and participates in meetings with DEV, Global’s finance team, and others throughout Brookings to coordinate activities and/or discuss programmatic direction. Maintains understanding of Global economic issues and developments and how they may affect and provide fundraising opportunities for Global. Monitors philanthropic trends as they relate generally to Global’s work.  Maintains an overview and understanding of several research projects within Global.
  • In coordination with the Senior Director, delegates administrative tasks to the Development Coordinator.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree preferred in international relations, development, or a related field.  Minimum 6 years of relevant fundraising experience required (preferably within an international, non-profit organization). Experience with grant writing and direct solicitation from individual, foundation, corporate and/or government donors at the $25,000 level or higher, preferred.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Familiarity with research-oriented work environments preferred, as well as an interest in international economics, international development policy, global education, and poverty issues. Mastery of Microsoft Office (MS) Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point) required; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus. Superior oral and written communication skills required, including proven ability to conceive and write grant proposals and funder reports. Capacity to learn other types of software programs; familiarity with on-line research resources. Familiarity with budgeting or demonstrated capacity to learn.  Experience with monitoring and evaluation processes, such as the development of results frameworks, desired. Must possess ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines; ability to work well with others; initiative; discretion; mature judgment; entrepreneurial spirit; and professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals.
